SDCC 2024: DCU Chapter One Begins With ‘Creature Commandos’ Teaser

by Erik Amaya

While we are still a year away from James Gunn‘s Superman movie and the start of the DC Cinematic Universe — or DCU — the new continuity will begin with the upcoming Max animated series Creature Commandos. Attendees of the Jim Lee & Friends panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2024 on Friday enjoyed a first look at the teaser:

The series centers on a covert team of “incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans.” Consider it something beyond the Suicide Squad — Task Force M to be precise — and the absolute last resort. The voice cast includes Steve Agee as Economos, as seen in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker; Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana; Anya Chalotra as Wonder Woman foe Circe; Zoe Chao as the aquatic Nina Mazursky; Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., father of the Task Force X minder who died in The Suicide Squad; Sean Gunn as both GI Robot and Weasel; David Harbour as Frankenstein; Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus; Indira Varma as The Bride; and, of course, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. It wouldn’t be a show without her, right?

As seen in the teaser above, Gunn’s sensibility is well on displayed as another gaggle of misfits must come together to take on adversity and not kill each other in the process. According to the filmmaker, series writer, and DC Studios co-CEO, the characters could leap into live action with the same actors reprising their roles. It will also feed into developments elsewhere like the second season of Peacemaker. In the meantime, though, we hope it will be as fun as Harley Quinn.

Oh, hey, did you notice the 1980s DC bullet is back for the studio logo? That’s pretty rad.

Creature Commandos debuts on Max in December.
