‘Uglies’ Trailer Reveals A World Where Beauty Is Not What It Seems

Is dystopian YA back?
Netflix seems to think so as it has unveiled a trailer for the upcoming film Uglies. Based on the novel by Scott Westerfeld, Joey King stars a Tally, a young woman eager for a cosmetic surgery conducted on her 16th birthday that will allow her to enter mainstream society. But when her best friend goes on the run and alerts her to problems with the mandated procedure, she discovers her life-long dream of being pretty may not be what she really wants.
The ideas are familiar, of course, but the flare of director McG may give the dystopian YA genre a new lease on life. And, personally, the film marks something special as this reporter knows the people who devised and produced the necklace King wears as Tally in the feature. So expect to hear from them in the not-too-distant future.
Also starring Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, and Laverne Cox, Uglies arrives on Netflix September 13th.
