Sci-Fi Fairy Tale ‘Moonshadow’ Receiving Expanded Edition in 2025
by Austin Gorton
Once upon a time, a Murderer’s Row of talent delivered the first fully painted American graphic novel, Moonshadow. Now, Dark Horse has announced they are releasing a new softcover edition of the series by writer J.M. DeMatteis (Spectacular Spider-Man), co-creator and artist Jon J. Muth (M, Silver Surfer) and letterer Kevin Nowlan (Doctor Strange) in May of 2025.

Being billed as both an expanded and definitive edition, the new softcover will collect all 12 issues of the original series, complete with all the original covers, concept art, notes from the creative team and script pages from DeMattetis. It will also include the illustrated novella Farewell Moonshadow ensuring the entire Moonshadow story is collected in one place. Moonshadow: The Definitive Edition—Expanded also features a newly painted cover by Muth.
DeMatteis calls Moonshadow “Dickens’ David Copperfield meets Siddhartha in space.” The Eisner Award-nominated presents a coming-of-age journey starring the mixed-species Moonshadow, recounting his strange birth, his escape from a deep-space zoo, and his struggles to survive in a war-torn universe. A “fairytale for adults” Moonshadow is satirical, whimsical, and thoughtful.
Moonshadow: The Definitive Edition—Expanded, presented in trade paperback for the first time, is 528 pages, and arrives in bookstores on May 6th, 2025, and in comic shops on May 7th, 2025 from Dark Horse Comics. It is available to pre-order now.
