NYCC 2024: Dynamite’s ‘Altered States’ Returns With Ray Fawkes And Purgatori

Dynamite’s Altered States is akin to DC Elseworlds or Marvel’s What If…? — a venue to explore the way the characters could be if circumstances were different. And for the upcoming Altered States: Purgatori Grindhouse Special, the demonic and vampiric queen of the Chaos! mythos takes center stage. But since the word “grindhouse” is in the title, expect writer Ray Fawkes to do a twisted 1970s spin on the Altered Chaos! reality. Joining him in the venture: artist Alvaro Sarraseca.
It’s 1976 and Tori Sachs is ready to celebrate graduating from high school via a beach party with her friends. But the coastline is rife with “satanic carnage” that will forever alter Tori and her pals. And it’s only years later, in our present, that the true events of that night can be revealed in a 28-page one-shot comic. Were the teenagers targeted for a very specific reason? And what unholy thing was behind the attack?
“Re-imagining our favourite demon vampire girl in a ’70s style summer teen-slasher gore-fest is, I’m going to say, some top-tier entertainment, and I think you’ll see the fun in every panel on the page,” Fawkes said in a statement. “What a perfect fit for Purgatori! What a ride!”
Supporting the title are covers from Joseph Michael Linsner, Lucio Parrillo, and Mike Rooth with cosplayer Rachel Hollon also providing a variant.
Altered States: Purgatori Grindhouse Special is due out this January.
