Yesterday, we learned the eleventh issue of ThunderCats will turn up the heat on the battle for Third Earth as Lion-O and Mumm-Ra face off for the first time. But what of issue #10?
Dynamite cleared up the mystery on Tuesday as they announced artist Joe Mulvey will join writer Declan Shalvey for a special standalone issue focusing on the Mu’Tants. Following the events of issue #9, the action pauses to give the bad guys their due. Their leader, Slithe, takes center-stage as he recalls his life on planet Plun’Darr before the Great War with Thundera shattered the lives of everyone — and continues to determine their actions as he plans to attack the ‘Cats of Third Earth before too long. It’s an opportunity to examine the antagonists in a way the animated series never could. Will we learn hidden depths to Slithe and his fellows? Are their actions not so malicious as the ‘Cats believe?
In a statement, Mulvey said working on ThunderCats has been a “genuine pinch me moment.”
“[I] Couldn’t be more proud to work on this issue,” he continued. “Epic action, twists and emotional moments any comic book fan will love.”
Shalvey added, “I’ve been a fan of Joe Mulvey’s work for quite a while and I thought this issue was the perfect opportunity to work with him … It’s been really exciting to concentrate the narrative solely on Slythe for an issue and have a great artist like Joe showcase him. Joe’s doing fantastic pages and I can’t wait for the ThunderCats audience to see it.”
Slithe also features on some of the covers for the issue, which also feature the work of Shalvey, David Nakayama, Lucio Parrillo, Jae Lee, and Rahzzah.
ThunderCats #10 reaches stores in November.
