Just The Specials: Wendy’s Boo! Bag

Just The Specials is a column where your old treat-tasting talent, Anton, goes out and about trying the newest offerings from the ever-evolving food landscape and reporting back on what I think. As it is still spooky season, I’m tucking into the Halloween-themed Boo! Bag from Wendy’s.
So what is the Boo! Bag? Wendy’s touts it as A “meal, featuring a Dave’s Single, small Hot & Crispy Fry, small chocolate Frosty, glow-in-the-dark Bone Chiller Frosty figure and a Boo! Book. HalloWEENDY’s is delivering spooky food and fun for “kidults” and parents!”

And honestly, with the exception of how clean and pretty everything looks in the image, this is pretty much exactly what we got. The Frosty had a plastic cap so it was squished down and not overflowing with the little Frosty curl, the fry container was not the black, white, and green, but the typical Wendy’s fry bag, but the rest was pretty spot-on.
The Dave’s Single was good enough. Way too much mayo and room temp, but nothing to complain about. The Frosty was tasty, and the fries were as good as they always are. I was ready to slam them after the whole Sponge Bob debacle, but I really, really love limited-time meals and I had to roll the dice and see if this would be as advertised, and it was.
The little book of coupons is called the Boo! Book, and Wendy’s says this about them “Proceeds from each Frosty Boo! Books coupon book sold directly benefit the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to find safe, loving and permanent homes for more than 113,000 children in foster care.”
They also go on to say “For just $1, Frosty fanatics can enjoy a spooky sweet coupon book with five free Jr. Frosty treats, featuring iconic Frosty Frights kids’ meal toy characters such as Franken Frosty, Frosty Bite, Coolie Ghoulie, Brrr Beast, Cold Spell and Junior! And the fun doesn’t stop there – Wendy’s is adding a sixth bonus coupon to redeem a $1.99 Wendy’s Kids’ Meal® with any purchase. Plus, each Wendy’s Frosty Frights kids’ meal will feature collectible Frosty Frights toys, with 11 toy characters to collect in all. Talk about an epic treat for the whole family!”
The coupons are kind of cute, as they have almost a trading card quality to them with each featuring the characters mentioned above.
As for the toy in the Boo! Bag, I’ve not really been excited about toys since back in the day when Taco Bell had those cool eyeballs on the twisty straws or the errant Pokémon or comic-book offering we get once a year.
Even then, kid’s meal toys have just been … kind of lackluster. A QR code to play an app game, some sticker that is warped by the steam from the food in the bag, and a bit of plastic that does not hold up like those old-school transforming hamburgers still hold up to this day.
With that harsh critique, I need you to lock in with me here when I tell you this. The hit of happy brain chemicals that washed over me when I opened the blind bag and got the first spooky skeleton frosty guy was like that first bite of a perfect cheese steak. When we opened the second blind bag, because we got two meals, we got the inverted art version of the first little Skeleton frosty guy. I almost fainted with joy.
Look at my perfect little friends! The white bits glow in the dark, they stand up even when the desk is shaken. They mesh with the rest of the spooky skeletal stuff I have in my office, without standing out to much but still maintaining their own little weird personality.
The verdict is that the food is kind of mid-ranged. If you like a basic fast-food burger and a decent frozen drink treat, go to Wendy’s. If you are looking for some fun coupons for said frozen drink treat and these delightful little weird Frosty guys to make yourself or someone in your life who likes this kind of thing happy, get over to your local Wendy’s and grab them before they are gone!
Until next time, this spooky stuff really makes me happy and I was losing the holiday spirit but this one goofy little group of ghouls totally pulled me back in!
