TV Review: ‘Agatha All Along’ Final Episode Is Just An Epilogue

It should be obvious after watching the final episode of Agatha All Along why they released it along with the penultimate installment. That is the show’s real climax as Billy (Joe Locke) and Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) square off against Death (Aubrey Plaza). The battle was the culmination of their entire journey. All that remained was the show’s lingering questions and that’s what the final episode was really for. It was more of an epilogue than an actual chapter. So viewers shouldn’t be expecting too much from it as it doesn’t top what came before.

The finale starts off hundreds of years ago when Agatha was about to give birth to her son. Death appeared to take him, but she gave Agatha more time with him instead. However, she didn’t know how much time and the boy died unexpectedly at a young age. From there, word began to spread about the Witch’s Road, a source of Agatha’s power. Using the rumor as a con, Agatha began absorbing other witches’ power throughout the ages. This revealed that she hoped to do the same at the start of the series, but Billy’s power manifested the road into reality. Agatha, now a ghost, explains this to Billy before the two of them go off in search of his resurrected brother.

Agatha is unique in that in just nine episodes the show had three pivotal twists. The first: Teen was Billy Maximoff. The second was Rio tuning out to be the personification of Death. The final twist was that the Road was never real. Billy made the whole thing occur with magic. Normally, a show with this many twists might be off-putting and too much. But the production handled them wisely. Series typically place their epilogue at the end of the climax. But there was so much to unravel here because of the twist that the epilogue needed an entire episode dedicated to itself. As a standalone episode, it didn’t match up to the rest. But it serves as a great capstone to a fun series.
