Gift Guide For Gamers 2024: WizKids ‘D&D’ Icons Of The Realms 50th Anniversary Minis Now At Target.com

While I adore the vast majority of the WizKids Dungeons & Dragons Icons of the Realms sets, the 50th Anniversary set has probably been my favorite of the offerings from the last few years. I think what makes me so excited about them, aside from the slew of chase figures, is that you can pull both vintage 1st edition versions of iconic characters and monsters and the 5th edition versions of them as well.

I was cleaning out my wallet — a thing I do around this time of year — and came across a Target Gift card. I figured it was trash as it has been in my wallet for at least a year. I checked it to see if anything was on it before it was going to get tossed out with random, well-worn receipts and bits of paper that had become so smudged I could not decipher the emails written on them, and was delighted to find there was $25 on the card that had been unused.

So, looking at the gifts I had purchased and realizing I did not need to allocate those funds to anything else I decided “what the heck!” and spoiled myself with a box of 50th Anniversary miniatures.

First off the stack I pulled a 5e Pit Fiend. This little Devil looks fantastic with it’s armored gauntlets, spiked mace, and skull necklace. The translation from page to mini is almost flawless and I really love how much life they captured in this little figure.

Next up: a 5e Shadow Demon. This demon has a fantastic sculpt and WizKids does such a great job with semitransparent plastics. The base and wing tips are smokey and transition into the black form of the creature and the hands and face sculpt on this really carry the energy of the entity.

I also scored a little 5e Goblin with it’s bow at the ready.

And the absolute gem of the box was none other than Strahd von Zarovich himself! The vampire lord has a ruby looking heart in one hand that may be swapped out for his wine glass from the cover of Curse of Strahd. He has a raven on the arm of his chair and in his other hand there is even a little red rectangle that looks like his tarot cards. This thing emulates the 5e Curse of Strahd cover so cleanly that it was hard not to be giddy when I unwrapped it.

Being able to get WizKids minis from Target when my LGS is not super-easy to get to or very accessible when I try to go inside is a whole new experience I’m grateful for and I can’t wait to see future releases hitting the shelves assuming these do well.

These make amazing stocking stuffers, fantastic gifts, and, honestly, I can see myself picking them up more often with the connivance of being able to use my Red Card on them.
