Previewing ‘Final Fantasy X Magic: The Gathering’

Welcome to the table,
Final Fantasy has been an iconic franchise for as long as I can remember. While I did not get a ton of time with console or PC video games as a kid, I was still a kid, and that means I got to hear a ton of other kids talking about these games that were defining their weekends as they were coming out. I remember seeing a lot of the game book art and concept art from the Final Fantasy games in various gaming magazines and being totally taken by the epic sword & sorcery vibes that they showcased. I watched friends play Final Fantasy 7 and by the time Final Fantasy 9 was released, I had a chance to sit and play it myself and I was totally transfixed. Aside from Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, I had not really spent a ton of time playing JRPGs. So, it was an amazing journey learning the spirit of the Final Fantasy landscape first hand while unleashing spells from “Blinky”, my Black Mage, and “V”, my monkey kid adventurer.
As is my normal throughline — and while video games are rad, and I love the escapism they provide and stories they weave — my flavor of gaming is always going to run towards the cards and books I can flip through at the table.
So when my pals at Magic: The Gathering told me they were collaborating with Final Fantasy you can imagine I was thrilled!
What is so rad about this series is that it’s set to feature the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork ever found in a single game pulling characters and creatures from across the franchise with a blend of Magic artists bringing moments from FF to life in their own style and classic Final Fantasy art pieces making appearances across some of these epic offerings.
Players and collectors are going to see the stories of characters from across the Final Fantasy landscape captured on over 100 legendary creature cards across the entire release. The team over at Magic has also given 55 of those legendary creatures borderless character cards to really showcase the brilliant art that has gone into this run.
I want this whole set! I am so delighted by everything I have seen so far and can’t wait to collect all the alternate art cards and commander decks! There is a double deck set that has two decks ready to play and features one of the greatest clashes in all time: Sephiroth and Cloud.
