Steve Rogers Faces A Changed World In July’s ‘Captain America’ #1

Steve Rogers is the ultimate standard of good in the Marvel Universe. In July, Captain America #1 begins his next chapter with a visit to an unexplored moment in his past.
Captain America is a man out of time, and that has meant we’ve seen a lot of his past. But the new creative team of Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti kick off their run with an unexpected and unexplored point of his story. Picking up immediately after waking up from suspended animation, Steve has to contend with the rise of a modern dictator … Victor Von Doom.
“I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades. I loved writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers Twilight, so getting to write the actual Captain America title feels like a dream!” Zdarsky shared. “We’re exploring Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I think is going to really surprise readers! I’m pretty excited to get this out there in the world, especially with Valerio and Frank’s amazing art!”
“Chip’s script is so clever and compelling that I’m sure readers will be dragged with us inside Steve’s heart and soul,” Schiti added. “He’s a man that became the living embodiment of truth, justice and freedom. He fought a war against Nazism, ‘died’ in that war, and came back to life to do his duty and fight again. That’s a lot of pressure, and if you do the math, he’s only in this late twenties in the era we’re exploring!”
I’m personally a huge Cap fan, but unfortunately his titles can be a little bit hit and miss. Too many writers focus so much on the World War II adventures that it can become a little tiresome. This concept- informing the present with the more recent past- could be much more novel, and giving Steve and Doom a hidden history has some very fun story potential.
