10/10Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming miniseries News From the Fallout: It’s written by Chris Condon and drawn by Jeffrey Alan Love. If those two facts aren’t enough to pull you in, then you need to get out more.
Condon, of course, is the mastermind scribe behind some of the best series in recent years, including That Texas Blood, The Enfield Gang Massacre, and Ultimate Wolverine. Love is known for his silhouette-like drawings, which have graced multiple comics covers as well as his own books, including The Last Battle at the End of the World and The Thousand Demon Tree.
Individually the creators are dynamite. Together, they are like an atomic bomb. Literally.
The series takes place during 1962 in Nevada’s Atomic Alley, where a rogue general intentionally sends his troops too close to an atomic bomb test. Instead of vaporizing the soldiers, the radiation turns the men into horrifying zombie-like creatures. Only one of the soldiers escapes unharmed, making him the target of the GI zombies’ attention.
If that sounds like something from a 1950’s B movie, you’re not far off. But in Condon’s hands, it’s treated well. The scribe effortlessly captures the voices of insane general to terrified private and everyone in between. You may be asking yourself: Do we really need another zombie story? The answer is: Yes, if Chris Condon is writing it.
And then there’s Love, who is making his direct market comic book debut as a series artist. Fans of his covers will not be disappointed in his interior work. The blacks, whites, and ashy greys lend the perfect tone to the B movie feel – not to mention the mini-nuclear winter as the fallout is literally snowing down on the soldiers.
I don’t know exactly why it’s taken Love this long to do regular interiors. It could be a choice, as cover artists tend to make more money. But if there’s any justice in the world, he’ll do more of them. And soon.
It’s so exciting to see two great creators team up and challenge each other to be even better. That’s precisely what we’re treated to in News From the Fallout. And it’s only the first issue. The rest can’t come soon enough.
