A Trip Through The Planes With Wizkids’ ‘Pathfinder Battles: Planar Perils’

Welcome to the table,

Oh Dilly Dilly! One of the major NPCs* that has shown up across my various campaigns for almost two decades is a Contract Devil name Charrn.

Contract Devils, or Phistophilus Devils as they are sometimes called called in Pathfinder, are typically beautiful, red skinned humanoids with multiple horns that sprout from their backs. Hanging from these horns are long scrolls containing a multitude of contracts for various pacts and bargains.

Charrn, in particular, has served as a big bad villain, a loving servant, a house keeper, a coin counter, and a savior to easily hundreds of player characters during my time behind the screen.

I bring up Charrn because my pals at WizKids are showcasing their upcoming Pathfinder Battles: Planar Perils set. I am super excited about the minis I have seen. I have already fallen deep into a rabbit hole of speculation about what they have not shown us yet.

I have played Pathfinder first edition and Dungeons & Dragons 3rd and 5th editions for some time with a campaign in each setting running parallel to each other. The Contract Devil just worked for nearly every role I needed as I moved my players along their various plot threads. While I have not seen a Phistophilus Devil in this set with the current renders, I have seen a ton to be excited about.

Above, you can see what is unmistakably variations of Lore Asmodius. I’m so excited for these minis. Both forms look like they are going to be amazingly sculpted — and being a fan of the way WizKids does semitransparent elements, those flames are going to be epic!

For those not in the know — as far as the cosmology of Pathfinder (and my homebrew games) go — Asmodius is the most powerful of archdevils and the only ruler in Hell who has obtained full god status. Cultists of Asmodius believe it wrote the contract of creation and leveraged it to obtain his deity status.

It’s so cool to see variations of the entity in this set. Both forms work really well at the table and can add a ton of dynamic plot moving moments to your game.

If you are looking for a “biblically accurate angel” this set has you covered. The meme-ability of this alone is going to be off the rails and I am here for it.

Meanwhile, here’s a Havoc Dragon. These winged engines of chaos are full of whimsy, but ultimately cause chaos and destruction as they reshape reality, and inspire creativity as they flutter this way and that.

I’m not even 100% sure what this one is, but I know I love it! Gold jewelry, multiple horns, that semitransparent scarf. The mini makes me want to buy whatever book it appears in so I can learn more about it!
