Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming to an end.
But fans of the Paramount+ series shouldn’t fret — or start a letter-writing campaign — just yet. Per the Paramount press release from yesterday, the series will continue until a fifth and final season. The third set of episodes has yet to stream while the cast and crew are currently shooting the fourth year of what is now a five year mission.
The series, set roughly a decade before James T. Kirk took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise, stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, the ship’s previous commanding officer. Like Kirk’s eventual mandate, Pike and his crew explore the galaxy, make first contact with alien species, and defend the ideals of the Unified Federation of Planets. Along for the mission: First Officer Una Chin-O’Reilly (Rebecca Romijn), Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), helmsman Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), communications officer Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), chief medical officer Dr. Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) and security chief La’an Noonien-Sing (Christina Chong).
“From the very beginning, Strange New Worldss set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,” executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman said in a statement. “We’re deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”
Season 3, meanwhile, will open with a resolution of last season’s cliffhanger, which saw the crew stranded on a world occupied by Gorn forces looking to both feed and breed. Once that’s resolved, the Enterprise will likely resume its patrols and exploration mission. But check out this trailer for a better sense of what it will be like:
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns July 17th on Paramount+ with a two episode premiere. Subsequent episodes will debut every Thursday through September 11th.
