Review: ‘The Seasons’ #8 Springs A Twist On Readers

Summary
The world is in danger and Spring Seasons is out to save it. Thankfully, she has a magical item and an ally on her side. Unfortunately, her ally is undesirable as far as what Spring feels she needs. Meanwhile what is Winter Seasons choosing to do that will make things worse?
Overall
9/10Writer Rick Remender conceive some memorable character moments. Also there is some foreshadowing of a future revelation. Remender writes the majority of the dialogue in a way that fits the story and its world. Unfortunately, he puts in a few bits in that feel more from our world than that of the narrative’s. These bits are debatably not too jarring, and hopefully most readers will agree with this assessment.
Artist Paul Azaceta provides the art for cover A and the interior pages. Azaceta adds some nice amounts of confetti to go along with the negative space background. This effect may evoke feelings of another world for some readers like it does for this reviewer. As for the interiors Azaceta renders a lot of talking and action sequences in a very dynamic manner. Yet when it comes to a certain plot twist sequence in the latter pages there arguably is a slight separation in tellings between art and writing. The flaw in question is not Azaceta’s fault so much as something that assistant editor Gabe Dinger and editor Iván Brandon should catch. Despite this apparent problem Azaceta is doing a fantastic job keeping characters on model while keeping the line between fantasy and reality just thin enough in story.
Colorist Matheus Lopes selections fit well with Azaceta’s art while also enhancing it. A very critical eye might notice that Lopes’s colors also help hide some of missing details in certain minimalistic areas.
Letterer Rus Wooton does a lot of work to make the inner monologues and the dialogues not collide while also allowing the art to show. Wooton achieves this successfully in this issue while also not overriding the visuals when it comes to pacing.
Cover B is the creation of artist EPHK and it is a mostly high quality piece of art. There is a great eye for, and application of, small details like that make the cover feel realistic. One example being the dripping paints. While Winter Seasons’ expression works well with the moody sensibilities of the setting and lighting. The only flaw is that Winter’s right ankle looks like it is an unnatural melding of her leg into her foot.
The Seasons #8 sees release on September 17th from Image Comics and Giant Generator.
