Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Bride!’ Debuts First Trailer

It was not too long ago that we had several Pinocchio movies coming out the same year. Then we had multiple Dracula films in a 12-month period. Now, we’re getting multiple Frankenstein projects in short order!
Here’s the synopsis: A lonely Frankenstein (Christian Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious (Annette Bening) to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride (Jessie Buckley) is born. What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!
Maggie Gyllenhaal, in her feature directing debut, is adding a fantastic Jazz Age flair to the story of the Bride of Frankenstein. It appears that the two monsters will become an outlaw duo like Bonnie and Clyde. The story of lovers on the run could be interesting and distinctive from Guillermo Del Toro‘s gothic take on Frankenstein. However, what concerns me is how Gyllenhaal originally envisioned The Bride! as a musical. Given how audiences responded poorly to Joker: Folie à Deux, the film could face the same problems.
