‘The Hand That Rocks The Cradle’ Remake Trailer Leaves Us Wondering About The Film

Did you know there’s a remake of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle on the way?
The original film, from director Curtis Hanson, starred Rebecca De Mornay as a women who poses as a live-in nanny to get revenge on the woman (Annabella Sciorra) who exposed her husband’s less-than-professional behavior as an OB/GYN. It is something a classic for certain audiences and we declared it a Weekend Cheesy Movie several years ago. Which, naturally, means it would be remade eventually.
This one comes from director Michelle Garza Cervera and stars Maika Monroe in the De Mornay role — although it remains to be seen if her motivation is the same — with Mary Elizabeth Winstead subbing in for Sciorra. From the trailer, the film is going for a more overt horror look than the thriller Hanson delivered in the 1990s. That choice makes a certain amount of sense as it immediately establishes a departure from the original film. Of course, it is unknown if the new movie can duplicate that precarious edge of cheese and legit melodrama to make it a perennial favorite. Then again, Winstead is always a welcome presence and Monroe has a chance to shine as the unhinged nanny.
Provided that’s even what’s going on. The preview suggests Winstead’s character may also be unhinged, which could lead to an interesting update of the original plot. At the same time, recreating the story with some modern updates is also a solid choice, but we’ll have to wait until October 22nd, when it debuts on Hulu, to know for sure. We’ll definitely keep an eye out for it, though.
