Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Black Knight’ Releases Animation Teaser

Black Knight is an action adventure animated film from director Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Primal). He recently released an animation teaser to gauge interest in a full theatrical film. I think I speak for every animation lover in the world when I say that we would love to see an original action adventure animated film from Tartakovsky released in theaters!
He had the following to say about Black Knight:
About 6 years ago we started development on a more adult animated action movie, The Black Knight. We developed it for a few years, the studio liked what we were doing but they were unsure if there is an audience that would go see it theatrically. We made a down and dirty test, and still no go. So to try something different I thought I would share the test to see if it can get a ground swell of excitement that would change the studio’s mind.
I won’t share the details of the story except for one element, our Knight Armor is 20 feet high and controlled by a knight inside using ropes, pulleys, and levers. The setting is around the 14th century.
Anyways, I’ve already said too much.
Sony Pictures Animation has become a go-to place for more experimental animated films that cater to a teen audience. Both Spider-Verse films were groundbreaking successes. The Mitchells vs The Machines and KPop Demon Hunters were both smash hits that could have been successful if theatrically released. Sony shouldn’t sleep on Tartakovsky’s genius and actually look at how the animation landscape has changed. The Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle movie is successful. There’s a hungry audience that wants action adventure animated films and an army of fans who grew up with Samurai Jack and aged into Primal.
Now is the perfect time for a theatrically released animated film from a critically acclaimed director. Honestly, the title should be Genndy Tartakovsky’s Black Knight. This prestige title treatment worked for Guillermo Del Toro‘s Pinocchio and Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal. You can see the creative DNA of Conan, Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and Lone Wolf and Cub in Genndy’s best work. Black Knight should be one of those epic stories for a new generation.
