IDW Is Headed To PAX U With ‘Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game’

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

I love Godzilla! I’m also a fan of almost everything tabletop-role-playing-game-related. So when my editor told me I could report on the upcoming IDW Godzilla game, I could have hugged the guy so hard I’d broke a rib!

Launching next March with a Kickstarter campaign, Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game is going to bring the talents of Jervis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe — three luminaries in the Warhammer world — together for their first co-created TTRPG.

I, for one, am super curious how this game is going to play. As of now, we know it is putting a team of players smack-dab in the middle of a kaiju attack where they have to stop the towering terror, or at best survive the encounter to tell the tale.

IDW’s Godzilla comic has done something really special: it has somehow managed to tell a really radical story about the King of Monsters clashing with G-Force, a team of kaiju fighters. I’ll admit I loathe the main goggle-clad character because he stands in opposition to Godzilla, but I still find myself looking forward to each issue as it hits my desk.

Now, I am not saying Jacen Braid, or any of the members of G-Force, are badly written. I think Tim Seely is doing a good job with the book. Honestly, Jet Jaguar cracks me up whenever he has time to be random in the panels. I just don’t like anyone who thinks they can stand against the towering lizard god, and Braid has said flat out he plans on trying to kill him, so that dude can kick rocks!

From an objective non-Godzilla fan club president perspective, this new game seems like it’s going to be doing some really cool things with probability mechanics, making use of a standard 52-card deck rather than dice. If you want to set yourself apart from the “Dragon-filled Dungeons” of the world in the hobby space right now, swapping out dice rolls for card flips is a sure way to do it.

If you are heading to Philadelphia for PAX Unplugged this coming weekend (November 21st-23rd, 2025), you can actually sign up to playtest Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game at this link while there are still slots left open at the tables.

For those not able to make it, the Godzilla RPG Kickstarter campaign will be launching in early 2026 and will feature limited-edition tiers with expected fulfillment by Fall 2026.

This is an exciting time for IDW Games because the Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game is their first title in more than 5 years, and they have some plans for other licensed properties to expand their game line. You can keep up with IDW Games at this link.

Until next time, Godzilla is the King of Monsters! I would 100% run this game just to play as Godzilla.
