Review: ‘The Author Immortal’ #4 Courts A King

Writer Frank J. Barbiere inserts some topical issues into a flashback in the main story. Though Barbiere seems to be stringing this commentary out as one of the main story beats of the series. While this is in no way a bad thing it does make some other commentary about a very specific topic more legally questionable. Still, all the commentary arguably fits the story and adds to both the plot and characterization. Speaking of the plotting, Barbiere is doing an overall good job at answering some questions while keeping enough new mysteries popping up to keep things interesting.

Artist Morgan Beem provides the visuals for the main story and cover A. When it comes to the cover, it is eye-catching and relevant to the main story. Debatably, what makes it capture a buyer’s attention is the color palette and how in combination with the design it evokes a sense of danger. As for the interiors, Beem does an amazing job of making moments feel large. Beem also draws with a fluid, yet confident style of line that assists with the creation of the fantasy elements.

Letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou does a fine job placing the anchors in the correct directions while putting them close enough to the respective characters. Otsmane-Elhaou’s work, specifically the stylization of the lettering, is definitely a key aspect to what is making this series work.

Artist Kate Kasenow and colorist Lauren Affe are responsible for the visuals in the backup story. Although the art and colors are great, they do not get as imaginative because of what the script calls for.

The design of cover B is by artist Alex Eckman-Lawn suggests the horror elements of this series rather than the fantasy. Nevertheless, this cover’s design is unique, and it features great proportions.
