Streaming And Screaming: ‘The Last Ronin’

The Last Ronin was a surprise for genre fans from last year that’s finally streaming for free. The film, about a “a desperate civilization ravaged by nuclear war and climate disaster” now using ammunition as currency. feels tailor-made to my taste with terse dialogue, avant garde fashion, and intuitive world-building. Each fight scene is slickly choreographed with camera angles and compositions that feel pulled from classical paintings and expressionistic photography. The film effortlessly blends the genre conventions of samurai films and spaghetti westerns. Genre film connoisseurs will recognize echos of Mad Max and Lone Wolf and Cub within the film’s plot and setting. It manages to carve out a unique space within the post-apocalyptic subgenre because of its unique visual presentation.
