Mattel Acquires ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle’ License In Multi-Year Deal

At the end of December, it was announced that long-time licensor Playmates would be losing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license at the end of 2026. Ahead of this weekend’s New York Toy Fair, we’ve learned who the next toy company is to take on the Turtles.
As revealed on their Instagram earlier this week, toy giant Mattel has acquired the TMNT license. According to the post, they will begin their time with the license in Summer of 2027. This launch will include figures based on the 2027 animated feature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 and the untitled live-action/CG animated film scheduled for 2028.
In the press release announcing this Roberto Stanichi, EVP and Chief Global Brand Officer, Mattel said: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is one of the most successful entertainment franchises in history, and partnering with Paramount on this iconic property marks a significant moment for Mattel and the brand. The enduring power of the Turtles lies in their ability to evolve with each generation, and we are excited to bring these characters to life in new ways.”

We are pleased to embark on this next chapter with Mattel, whose ability to innovate on a global scale positions us to further grow the brand and engage fans across generations.”
Now, Anton and I talked about this license and who it might go to in the first edition of our Toy Unfair column. I pointed out at that time that Mattel was probably my front-runner, given the Turtles of Grayskull line felt like a tryout for Mattel to acquire the license.
And rightfully so. The TOG figures were frankly a fantastic line. Though they were technically He-Man figures, the actual Turtles were absolutely wonderful, and the Shredder in the line in particular was a standout. If Mattel were to just deliver figures with these molds (and a permanent shell), I would already say it’s a successful launch.
