With One Week Remaining, ‘Dragon Rider’s Primer’ Soars Past Its Goal On Backerkit
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
One of the things my tabletop fantasy players enjoy most is the ability to hop on the back of an iconic dragon, or some other large flying creature. It allows them to take to the skies and travel in style or attack some villain in the most unhinged way possible.

Dragon Rider’s Primer, the new Goodman Games supplement for Dungeons & Dragons, is slated to do exactly that. This very rules-heavy sourcebook is set to elevate your table with a library of flying mounts for all characters and the foes they clash with.

More than just a book with a bunch of new mounts and items, this book contains spells and backgrounds to customize your player character. It allows unique system rules to help you enhance how they would make use of and be adept at flying astride winged creatures within the world of your TTRPG.

Giant insects are on the table, and I, for one, am here for it! There are also animal variants, and of course, the epic dragons you can jump aboard and soar through the sky upon.

Dragons are presented in the form of Skydrakes. Each of the variations is going to have its own natural or magical abilities to make them not only formidable foes but also beloved companions to those players who seek out mastery of combat in the skies.

I like that the team on this book has provided multiple variants of flying creatures, but still kept their scope from being overwhelming by allowing things to fall into Animal, Insect, or Dragon categories.

In addition to new mounts and aerial combat rules, there are 12 new subclasses, one for each core class, that you can make use of alongside your D&D 5e/5.5 rules and systems.

It’s also worth calling out that Hydro74 of D&D alternative cover fame has done a really nice job of crafting an alt cover for this book that will only be part of the first print run.
Dragon Rider’s Primer has already met its goal over on Backerkit but as of the time of writing this, it has a bit of a way to go before the campaign is over. You can check it out at this link.
You can also check out a little more on the YouTube video below.
This is the kind of thing that is going to really go over well as a gift or a supplemental book for the party or Storyteller who likes to add something extra to their games. I know a ton of players who are always looking for ways to fly, and I enjoy new combat mechanics, so I’m for sure going to be testing this out when I get my hands on it.
Until next time, when the campaign ends, Goodman Games has said they will be publishing a retail version that is going to go into game stores everywhere, so you also have that to look forward to!
