Imogen Poots & John Reynolds are now Sex Criminals.
For a moment, it seemed comic book adaptations on the streaming platforms were taking a backseat to video games as source material. But Prime Video still has a vested interest in making Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky‘s Image Comics title into a television show. And as Deadline reported late last week, it has its stars.
While Poots has never exactly headlined a comic adaptation before — her I Kill Giants feature film role isn’t the lead part — she is a constant film and TV presence with appearances in 28 Weeks Later and Prime’s own Outer Range. She’s also phenomenal in Green Room. Reynolds, meanwhile, looks like he stepped straight out of Zdarsky’s sketchbook. His previous credits include an episode of Ghosts, several episodes of Yellowjackets, and, of course, Stranger Things. The pair are set to play Suze and Jon, respectively, two people who discover they can stop time while having sex. Naturally, it leads to a life of crime and some wild adventures.
The eight-episode program comes courtesy of showrunners Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani, and Tze Chun. Nanjiani will also appear in the series. All, of course, are executives producers alongside Dani Melia, Dani Gorin, Fraction, and Zdarsky.
Prime’s decision to move forward with this one is heartening. For one thing, it means they are still interested in adapting comics after planning to make The Boys more of a franchise with prequels and spinoffs. Also, since the release of the short-lived Paper Girls adaptation, it seemed as though the platform was done with comics not featuring superheroes. Hopefully, the assembled talent will give Sex Criminals a chance to run several seasons. Or, who knows, maybe a miniseries is the way to go.
Sex Criminals is not yet scheduled for release. Yes, that is a pun.
