Mini Review: ‘I Love Boosters’ Proves Why We Need To Support Original Cinema

Boots Riley has one of the most unique contemporary voices working today. With Sorry To Bother You and I’m A Virgo, he created an afro-surrealistic alternate reality that acts as a funhouse mirror to the society we live in. His latest film, I Love Boosters, follows a group of shoplifters who take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven. The film stars Keke Palmer (Nope), Demi Moore (The Substance), Naomi Ackie (The End of the F***ing World), Hannah Alline (Doom Patrol), and LaKeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah). 

The film is a clothing caper, fashion show, sci-fi spoof, and social satire all rolled into one candy-colored experience. Much like his previous projects, Riley’s vision, political perspective, and multi-tonality will entrance some viewers and upset others — sometimes both at once!

Even when certain aspects didn’t land for me, they were quickly followed by a scene that was creative and surprising. Riley makes use of old-school film techniques, including stop-motion, miniature sets, and in-camera trickery. He brings to the cinema something it’s been sorely lacking for years: truly original ideas and themes that gets the audience talking long after the credits roll. We need more films like it, so I would encourage everyone to check it out.
