Supergirl Week: Just The Specials — ‘Supergirl’ X KFC Brings Collectables, Buckets, And More To The Table

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

Just the Specials is where your old pal Anton sits down with all the new, weird, and often wild menu items, food offerings, and branded collaborations that find their way onto the plate in front of him. I was actually really delighted with the Supergirl X KFC menu collaboration, as it had some really fun standout bits to it, and had the opportunity, thanks to the really radical folks over at KFC, to check out the mystery toys that came along with the meals, as well as some other epic promotions they have going on. Let’s get into it.

Along with their fun Supergirl menu offerings, KFC has released a line of Supergirl-themed collectable keychains that have gotten some really great responses online, including “I need all the collectibles!” and “Need 15 of those Krypto keychains, actually!”

The collection, packaged in blind bags, includes Lobo, played by Jason Momoa, Ruthye, played by Eve Ridley, two versions of Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, and the adorable Krypto.

The figures have exaggerated proportions and are made of solid sculpt, so there are no moving parts. Each of these brightly colored offerings is fixed with a solid cord through its head that connects to a threaded plastic Supergirl emblem that serves as a plastic hook to connect to backpacks and belt loops.

These would not be something I would put on actual keys, but would look great on a collector’s desk, backpack, or convention bag. It’s always fun to see the full lineup of figures from production runs like these, especially when the care and consideration for both recognizability and durability mesh as well as they do here.

In addition to the fun blind-bag collectables, KFC produced a limited edition Krypto Collectible Bucket. The reusable collectible bucket is inspired by the current movie popcorn bucket craze and features a puppy Krypto-inspired lid alongside Supergirl X KFC-themed artwork.

KFC is far from done, as they are also hosting a Supergirl activation that goes far beyond the theater and restaurants. Titled the Supergirl Intergalactic Rest Stop Tour, KFC has taken a custom-wrapped Airstream across the country this month, holding various in-person activations in places like Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Santa Monica, with the final activation occurring on June 24th in Burbank, at the Warner Brothers Studio Office.

These activations have complementary KFC meals, photo opportunities, custom giveaways you can only find on this tour, “Galaxy Glow-Ups” courtesy of Joico, and cosplay experiences that invite fan participation from those who are attending.

Until next time, Marketing in recent years has gone from QR codes and websites to these in-person activations that pop up and happen around town, and I, for one, welcome these kinds of things and look forward to more brands and intellectual properties following suit.
