A Retro-Future Private Eye Takes A Surprising Case In ‘Ray Gunn’ Trailer

Ray Gunn is filmmaker Brad Bird‘s dream project. And after a long time in the wilderness, it’s finally arriving on Netflix this December. Take a look at the trailer:
Sam Rockwell offers his voice to Raymond Gunn, a private detective operating in Metropia — a city in an alternate future as seen from 1939. His latest case draws him into dealings with “aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova (Scarlett Johansson).” Having seen the first few minutes of the film at San Diego Comic-Con, we can vouch for the high quality animation and voice work, which also included the legendary Tom Waits as Gunn’s partner in crime-detection. And as the trailer proves, it has all the hallmarks of a great animated concept.
Okay, we’ll admit it, we’re suckers for retro-future here at Comicon, even if much of it tends to resemble Star Wars‘s capital world Coruscant. Impossible art deco skyscrapers, cloud cars, and jets packs just scratch a very specific itch and we’re glad to see Bird working with the visuals.
The rest of the cast also impresses: Alan Tudyk, Matt Berry, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Chernus, Kether Donohue, Michelle Rodriguez, Aasif Mandvi, Matt Jones, Kathryn Hunter, John Ratzenberger, Justin Peck, and Patton Oswalt.
Ray Gunn arrives in select theaters on December 8th and makes its way to Netflix on December 18th.
