Absolute Superman #24 sees John Henry take up the reins of narration and comment on both Superman and his own new start in Smallville. It’s a simple enough issue in which John Henry evolves his character and his suit to look and feel more impressive than his original look in the Absolute Universe.

Absolute Superman #24

As such, it’s a comic with a different pace from previous action-packed issues. But that’s not to say it isn’t without its moments. Far from it. We get three new Absolute versions of some rather low-level Superman villains, who are all served up far happier endings in this darker universe than they do in the mainstream DC Universe. I enjoyed their inclusion and fresh takes on their appearances, and I like that there is such a thing as meaningful rehabilitation for these reprobates.

As well as spotlighting a character who will, no doubt, become an integral part of Absolute Superman, we also get to see Kal-El enjoying some much-needed downtime on the farm and at the local diner, where Lana Lang seems to be growing in her relevance to this series too. It’s a well-scripted issue with great art from Juan Ferreyra, who continues to dazzle. Even in the more mundane moments, like John, Kal and Lana talking away at the diner counter, enjoying one another’s company.

A light and refreshing issue that gives John Henry more of a voice and introduces him properly as a new friend and ally to Absolute Superman.
