Review: ‘Young Justice’ #19 Faces Wonder Girl’s Destiny

Wonder Girl has been a stalwart member of Young Justice since the beginning. She’s been the team’s rock, the only unwavering member of the group for its entire existence. So she gets a much deserved spotlight in Young Justice #19.

This is a much overdue story as we see what’s been bothering Wonder Girl through this volume of the series. It’s a story that gives readers the right perspective on what Cassie Sandsmark’s life has gone through. It comes to us from Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker, Scott Godlewski, Gabe Eltaeb, and Wes Abbott.

Cassie finally confronts her grandfather, Zeus, about what he wants from her. However, it’s short-lived as Wonder Girl is attacked by the Titans of Myth! Can she enlist her friends and teammates without putting them in harm’s way? And what does the Pantheon want with her?

I really enjoyed this issue, but my goodness, it was paced like greased lightning. After the heavily decompressed arcs that made up the first half of this series, these last few issues are almost too far in the other direction. However, Walker and Bendis deliver a script with just enough exposition to give us a story without giving us an info dump. It makes for a fulfilling read that’s full of story.

Godlewski continues to do really great work on the series. His take on Cassie is strong while striking a balance between physical strength and the grace she’s always had. With the compressed nature of the issue, we don’t get a lot of on-page action, but he’s able to draw just a splash or two to give readers visions of some high octane action. It could be teasing an arc we’ll never see, thanks to the books’ cancellation next issue, but it’s a lot of fun.

The series is coming to an end, and I’m disappointed to see it go. I really hope the characters have a new home ready.
