Table Top RPG Creators Corner — Dice Maker Jordan of ‘Dicepoint’

For today’s Creators Corner, I had the chance to chat with Jordan of @Dicepoint about their handmade dice.

Anton: Hello, I appreciate you taking the time to sit down and talk with me about your craft. Between your Instagram, Twitter, and Website Shop your dice designs stretch far and wide. Before we dig deeper into the craft of dice making, tell us a little bit about the creator behind the product.

Jordan: Hey! Thanks for reaching out. My name is Jordan, and I am a 29-year-old Canadian living in Ottawa. When I’m not working on dice, I love hanging out and playing D&D with my friends, playing video games, going rock climbing, and playing my guitar! I started Dicepoint during the pandemic as a creative outlet and have been absolutely blown away by the reception my dice have received online!

Anton: Your work is wonderful so it is no wonder people are so excited about the pieces you create. Now how long have you been involved in the tabletop role-playing game space?

Jordan: Not too long actually! I first tried D&D in 2019 with a friend from work and some of his friends. At the time, none of us had any real idea how to properly play, but we all had an absolute blast. I got instantly hooked and wished I had started sooner! Shortly after we started, I began looking into buying my own dice and the dice addiction took off. From there, I introduced my partner to it and she got hooked too. Luckily, we have a close friend who is an experienced DM, and has since been running amazing campaigns for us!

Anton: Now is dice making your full-time job?

Jordan: It is not! I work from home full-time as a programmer.

Anton: How did you get into dice craft?

Jordan: My first experience with dice crafting was finishing raw dice sets (dice sets that had not been polished or inked). After finishing some raw sets, I started talking with my friends about how cool it would be to make my own dice and started doing some research online. I found an amazing creator on YouTube named Rybonator who released tutorial videos on dice making. After doing some learning using premade molds, I decided to jump in with both feet and have my own set of masters made, and buy the equipment necessary to make my own molds and pour dice sets that I could brand as my own.

Anton: That is so cool! YouTube is such a great resource for learning new stuff. Now you release dice in seasons, can you talk a little bit about that?

Jordan: Sure! Seasons are my way of describing my dice releases. Each Season features new designs created specifically for that Season, as well as some returning older designs. During a Season, I will post a finished set every few days that will be available for purchase in the Season shop update. Once the Season shop update approaches, I release posts that showcase the available finished sets and the date and time of the update. Releasing my dice this way allows me to take production breaks to rest, and improve my craft and available products. It is during these breaks that I will make new molds, work on my business, and order new stickers, masters, materials, etc. for the next Season.

Anton: You take commissions. In that process do you prefer to be given a lot of direction or do you enjoy it more when the person commissioning you lets do what you want?

Jordan: I would say it’s about 40/60. My goal with commissions is always to create a set that my client is obsessed with. Before starting the work, I have an in-depth conversation with my client about what they are looking for, and what I have in mind for their set. Often times I am creating a set to match their TTRPG character, so having descriptions or other artwork helps a ton. I pour the set using my own techniques, and once it comes out of the molds, I discuss ink colors and send ink sample photos to my client so they can choose a color. The entire process is very collaborative and fun!

Anton: What would you credit as something that inspires you to create?

Jordan: Definitely video game scenery. I recently finished Elden Ring and the landscapes in that game have absolutely inspired me when creating some of my designs this season.

Anton: I myself have a Tarnished who has wandered The Lands Between and can totally see that as a place one could draw inspiration from. What out there in the TTRPG space excites you?

Jordan: Other creators! I am always super stoked to see what people are creating and I love seeing all the amazing dice and other TTRPG products that are being made by small businesses online. I recently received an incredible handmade dice box/ rolling tray from @immeogames that I can’t stop obsessing over.
