Advance Review: An EPIC For The Modern Age- ‘Hunt. Kill. Repeat.’ #2

I love stories about gods. Something about personifications with personalities that are just as flawed and varied as mortals really appeal to me. My weekly TTRPG game is set in a world where two pantheons from two reflective realities are fighting through a cosmic chess game with avatars, double agents, and undead goofballs being the unaware (but quickly catching on) pieces to the whole cosmic ordeal.

Games like Darkstalkers, Darkstalkers 2, and the newer God of War just scratch that itch for timeless cosmic entities armed with legendary items clashing with other immortal beings in ever-changing landscapes. And now, Hunt. Kill. Repeat. from Mad Cave Studios brings all of that and more!

Okay, let’s get you caught up just in case you were late to the table like I was on this book. Hunt.Kill.Repeat. is a story set in a world where the Greek gods have invaded Earth, and humanity is forced to fall in line under their tyrannical rule.

However, one god, Artemis, refuses to get in line with the god’s new world order and instead finds comfort, and eventually love, in the arms of a mortal. In very Kill-Bill fashion, a pregnant Artemis is called to Olympus, her brethren strip away her powers, kill her significant other, and leave her in a forced coma with a mystical IV drip jabbed into her arm.

The story jumps ahead ten years, and Artemis wakes up justifiably full of rage. In a brilliantly illustrated handful of pages Artemis rips through a bunch of armored guards and escapes to meet Tempest, the one responsible for orchestrating her escape, and they head off to plot the downfall of the other gods.

Okay, if you did not get issue 1, go get it… now on to issue 2!

Issue 2 of Hunt. Kill. Repeat. picks up in a flurry of action, much like issue 1, and is a true page-turner from cover to cover. We are treated to some really fun backstories about Artemis and her lover, along with a great moment involving one of her new allies (which I’m not spoiling here, but can’t wait to talk about once the book hits the stands!). And there there is one hell of a god-on-god slug-fest that takes place… and gang… it’s an absolute thrill ride!

Seriously, this book is pure fun. Like BIG FUN! And the setup for issue three is nothing short of EPIC – there’s no other word for it.

One of the standout aspects of this series is Mark London‘s writing. He effortlessly blends fast-paced action with deep emotional moments that add layers to the world-building on every page. These timeless themes of betrayal, family, and consequences are skillfully woven into the story, adding real depth to this page-turner of a comic.

And let’s not forget about Francesco Archidiacono‘s art, which is brilliantly crafted and breathes fresh life into something that in the wrong hands could have been kinda tired. Lee Loughridge brings a beautiful pallet of eye-catching colors to the table and Russ Wooton’s lettering just sings!
