Exalted Funeral Rolls Out ‘The Hexcrawl Toolbox’

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

Mapmaking and random encounters are in a lot of ways the lifeblood of a good TTRPG game. The big story moments are a ton of fun but the things that happen between here and there sometimes are as memorable if not more memorable than the planned adventure your party is going on.

Exalted Funeral has some really cool new map-adjacent offerings you should check out if you are looking to upgrade your map game in the TTRPG space.

First up is The Hexcrawl Toolbox. This deluxe worldbuilding accessory can be used with almost any fantasy TTRPG. It contains 150 physical hex tiles for eight different biomes, along with a guidebook on how to set up and run a hex crawl*, and a ton of fun extras for your games. If you’re already familiar with Exalted Funeral’s Undying Sands and Bottled Sea, this toolbox totally works with those as well.

The whole thing also comes in a really rad case and you get wooden player pawns, treasure tokens, and a bunch of other cool little items that make this one of the best mapping TTRPG items I have seen.

Until next time, if you are looking for a holiday gift option for the TTRPG person who already has almost everything this may be a good option to check out.

*Hex Crawl: I love to do these notes for my editor because he always texts me when he is reviewing my submissions and asks what things are and Hex Crawl is going to be new for him so it may be new for you as well.  A Hex Crawl is an open-ended sandbox-style adventure that originated in old-school D&D games.

In a Hex Crawl, the storyteller produces a map with a lot of points of interest, or POIs, for the players to explore within a fairly large geographic area. The map is given to the players, usually as an in-character item and it allows the players to say “I want to go explore that skull-looking mountain over there” or “We want to head towards this swamp-looking place” and the game takes place in that place to place cadence rather than in a room to room dungeon crawl.
