Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On May 8, 2024

by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

Ain’t No Grave #1, Image Comics

Skottie Young and Jorge Corona get the band back together this week with a 40-page debut for Image’s new macabre Western fantasy. I’ll pick up just about anything these two are attached to.

Falling in love and becoming a mother has a way of taming the wildest oats. Ryder put her violent past behind her to settle down. That was all before she learned everything she loved was all going to be taken away. Now she has to pick up her guns and ride to kill the figure who’s behind the threat…

which just happens to be Death.

Dracula: Blood Hunt #1, Marvel

Blade is Dracula’s arch-nemesis, the most formidable vampire hunter in the history of vampirism. He’s training his daughter Brielle Brooks to take up the mantle. But during the Blood Hunt, day is night and all is not as it appears. These adversaries may find their interests briefly aligned to protect the fate of humanity.

There’s a couple ways this could go, and I sincerely hope they don’t job King Vampire out to Eric Brooks for a cheap pop. I don’t mind seeing the evil Count put younger talent over, but Blade is still a pup compared to the near centenarian. If it’s done right, though, this could be epic.

The Avengers #14, Marvel

The current Avengers are tied up and under siege for the Blood Hunt event, so Cap calls in a new team. Steve Rogers gathers the forces of Quicksilver, Hawkeye, Hercules and Hazmat to take on the hordes of vampires attacking all over the world. When they encounter an organized army of vampires in uniform led by a surprise villain, it gets personal.

A second Avengers team. More vampires. You have my attention.
