Free League’s ‘Vaesen’ Unleashes Fresh Horrors In ‘Mythic Carpathia’!

I am so ready for this book! I have been a fan of Vaesen since the first book was released by Johan Egerkrans back around 2017. Well before the powerhouse TTRPG company Free League announced the first Vaesen game, I was pooling over the brilliant art and folklore in those beautifully bound pages and craving more weird and wonderful horrors from this strange new landscape opening up to me.
Since 2020, Free League has released some absolutely stunning TTRPG books based on Johan’s art, written by Nils Hintze. What is so cool is that it has become such a fan-favorite setting, winning a ton of awards, including three ENNIEs. I have thought they need more vampires and ghosts, and looking at this newest campaign, I think we are about to get just that!
Mythic Carpathia is set in the streets of Prague combining, in typical Vaesen fashion, history and myth with old-world charm and moody atmospheric set pieces perfect for memorable moments at the TTRPG table.
This hardback volume will take your Vaesen adventures to Central and Eastern Europe. It includes information about the Prague branch of the Society, a gazetteer of the city complete with adventure locations and secret societies, a chapter with over a dozen local mythical beings including Drekavac, Golem, the infamous Baba Yaga, and what I think we always need more of, Vampires.
The book also presents three new complete mysteries to play, set in Prague, Ukraine, and Transylvania. The book will include large separate maps of Mythic Carpathia and the city of Prague if unlocked as stretch goals.
Mythic Carpathia is written by a team of Polish and Ukrainian writers and editors in partnership with the Free League core team, and illustrated by Johan Egerkrans and Anton Vitus.
Vaesen is such a moody and fun setting to table with, and I think those who love the game alongside those who are looking for a new way to play in a gothic historical horror setting are going to be really drawn to this new Mythic Carpathia book.
