Kickstarting Comics: ‘Boxes Comic Magazine’ #3 — More From The Great Indie Comics Anthology

Another great anthology, Boxes Comic Magazine Volume 3 from Steven Ingram and Third Bear Press, highlighting the depth and diversity of modern British comics, is funding on Kickstarter right now.

Another outing for an excellent Brit comics anthology, with editor Steven Ingram doing a great job of bringing you the very best of new Brit artists making really great short comics.

As before, Boxes sticks to its remit of highlighting the breadth of Brit comics talent. And if it’s anything like volumes 1 and 2, it will be 80 pages of work that impresses. Like all the best anthologies, you’ll not love everything inside, but with something of this nature, that’s almost the point, celebrating the whole range of comics, with different styles and storytelling that means it’s almost a badge of honour in giving you so much breadth that something’s going to fall outside your comfort zone.

This third volume features comics from Taran Taylor, Asya Voitenko, KitsuneArt, Fran Morton, J W Murray, Millie Strachan, Savannah Storm, Daniel Bell, Abs Bailey, Elliot Hanks, Steve Thompson, and Feff Silvers, with an article about the horror comics of Erika Price by Leo Healy.

Excellent comics, perfect to highlight the huge depth and breadth of things happening in Brit comics. This crowdfunding campaign’s keeping it simple, focusing on pledges for physical and digital editions of Boxes Volume 3. Previous volumes are available as add-ons, as are Ingram’s own (very good) graphic novels Holly and Burn With Me.

“Asya Voitenko is a Ukranian artist currently in the UK. She values her Eastern Europen identity which really comes through in her work as well as her interest in horror and surreal imagery.”

“Savannah Storm is an illustrator who enjoys making comics and zines, inspired by her love of drawing from observation in her sketchbooks. Her comic for Boxes is about mental health and the joys of wild swimming.”

“Taran Taylor creates comics that are a mix of fiction and non-fiction and inspired by the feelings and issues important to him. His comic A Dream of One’s Own is a beautifully illustrated story about the comfort of daydreaming.”

“Returning from his appearance in Boxes Vol. 1, Steve Thompson is back with a new story about the struggles of single parenthood and the lengths we will go to to protect our children.”

“Daniel Bell is the creator of a number of excellent comics including the engaging folk horror, The Ferryman, and most recently The Fingers of Famhairstone. His comic for Boxes finds him battling against passing his inherent nihilism on to his family.”

“J W Murray (writing) and Fran Morton (art work) are creating Murder Ballad, a historical comic about the fate of the “Dark Minstrel”. Murray is author of the comic collection Short, Dark & Peculiar and the webcomic The Wilder Shore. He also recently published a fantasy novel The Alchemist’s Child. Morton is an illustrator and comics creator. Her comics are often inspired by history and fantasy. She is the creator of the comics collection With Malicious Intent and most recently the one shot folklore comic, Tide.”

“Millie Strachan is a recent graduate of the Duncan Jordonston Animation course where she directed the short film The Curious Happenings of No. 24, 10th Avenue. Her comics are mostly autobiographical, taking inspiration from the female cartoonists of the underground comix movement.”

“Abs Bailey creates comics in a vibrant, colourful style. She is the creator of the graphic novel Zebedee and the Valentines. The comic she is creating for Boxes features bugs and what they’d risk to get a bite of that sweet, sweet fruit.”

“Elliot Hanks creates comics that have a strong sense of human connection in a mix of history, nature and fantasy. Their story, Star/Crossed, explores the relationship between a fisherwoman and her noble partner, the Lady of the Manor and the lengths they will go to for their ideal life.”

She is the creator of the murder mystery comic Midnight Heart and was part of the recent Change anthology from WIP Comics.
