WizKids Raises The Undead With Their ‘Dungeons & Dragons Classic Monster Collection’

Welcome to the table,

Nostalgia is powerful. It’s defined as “a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.”

For me, those happy times are typically around the gaming table, laughing with friends over boxes of pizza and poorly painted minis. We’d be tossing dice and facing a string emotions based on outcomes and what they’d mean for characters who live on sheets of paper littered with math and mentions of strange spells.

The mysteries, the quests, the settings, and more than anything else, the monsters serve as fixed points in my memory. I can always look back those memories fondly and remember the early days in those strange worlds . I had yet to learn all the mechanics of those foul fiends. Each encounter was fresh and new.

Wizkids does a fantastic job reminding me of those early days at the table with their Classic Monster collection. The upcoming set, Dungeons & Dragons Classic Monster Collection U-Z is just another example of how much work the team over at WizKids puts into these outstanding offerings.

The modern versions of Classic Monster collections are also very cool. I love the modern Umber Hulk. I’m a fan of the way all the modern monsters look, and I love that there are so many people playing D&D and really getting into the hobby and the lore and the worlds.  I love that even in all of that, WizKids is still out here with these classic monster collections showcasing the original forms of these classic creatures.

The Yeti has the snapped spearhead and shield complete with detached arm still stuck in the straps.

The Xorn looks so strange and otherworldly in the original art, but this mini really captures its strangeness, leaning into the creature’s original design.

The Wight is one of my favorite undead, and the mini is nothing short of spectacular. The hair, the rope belt, the rag cloak, the claws on its hands and feet … it’s so menacing and delightful.

I missed out on the Free RPG day Strahd von Zarovich mini, but this classic Vampire really leans into the iconic old school vampire vibes and the mist around its cape is so well sculpted.

Even the Zombie captures that iconic old-school feel.
