‘Battlefield’ Enters The Battle Royale World With ‘Battlefield: REDSEC’
by Sage Ashford
In a surprise move, Electronic Arts has shadow-dropped Battlefield REDSEC, a free-to-play battle royale mode set within the Battlefield 6 universe. Available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, the Epic Games Store, and Steam, REDSEC launches along with season 1 of Battlefield 6, sending players to South California in a battle at Fort Lyndon to decide the last man standing.
It’s a cool follow-up to the launch of Battlefield 6, which is already one of the most successful games to release this Fall. It is a bit puzzling, though, that they released the gameplay trailer on the same day as the launch of the game. That said, it’s little easier to forgive when it’s set to one of the greatest songs of all time: 2Pac and Dr. Dre‘s “California Love”.
That said, REDSEC apparently has more to it than a standard battle royale mode. According to Electronic Arts, players can also expect “Gauntlet”, a mode that puts 8 teams of 4 players each into round-based missions with a tournament-style knockout format. Each new round will offer different missions and locations to shake things up. Players will also be free to customize their games via Battlefield Portal, which can alter the Fort Lyndon stage in different ways. Examples used included fighting with sledgehammers only, or forcing headshot contests.
While this announcement is a surprise, it does seem well-timed to pull people back into the Battlefield ecosystem just before Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 launches in a couple weeks.
