Is This ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Teaser Suggesting A Certain Character’s Fate?

At CCXP Mexico 2026 over the weekend, Paramount unveiled a first look teaser at the upcoming fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. As it is a teaser, it is focused more on the program’s feature film quality production values and the majesty of space. But when it highlights the characters, it keeps making the point of space being dangerous and then cutting to a moment with La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong). Despite all she has survived in the previous three years — to say nothing of her backstory — is this teaser suggesting she may not make it out of this year alive?

While the show focuses on Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) tenure as commander of the U.S.S. Enterprise, it also features original Star Trek series characters Spock (Ethan Peck), Nyota Uhura (Ceila Rose Gooding), Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) and even James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) in a recurring capacity as the first officer of another ship. But it also contains a handful of new characters who could, potentially, not see the series to its conclusion. Is La’an one of them? Jokingly, she is wearing a red shirt, and we know happens to red shirts who are not Scotty. At the same time, La’an is the Enterprise‘s security chief, a role unspecified in TOS, so she could conceivable still be aboard the ship once Kirk takes to the center seat. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see Paramount teasing her fate as the program nears the end of its own five year mission.

Also, not for nothing, Chong is one of the show’s great assets in terms of a wide array of talent. Her character has been featured in jokier stories, serious time travel plots, a romance with Spock, and dance sequences — all of which she excels at.

All that said, with Paramount endings its relationship with Alex Kurtzman and his production company, Secret Hideaway, there may not be an advantage in keeping any of Strange New Worlds‘ original characters alive. That is disheartening as we hoped producer Akiva Goldsman could pitch his idea for Star Trek: Year One, a continuation of Strange New Worlds focused on Kirk and the TOS crew with the current actors also staying aboard. La’an’s fate could be an indication of how that potential series might marry up TOS to the look and feel of modern Trek. Then again, the studio itself seems to believe Trek‘s future is back in movie theaters.

As you can see, La’an and what becomes of her means more to the franchise than it otherwise might. And it will begin to unfold when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns to Paramount+ on July 23rd.
