This first of a planned series of graphic novels is adapted by writer Jadzia Axelrod (DC’s Galaxy series, Hawkgirl) and artist by Sarah Webb (Legends & Lattes, Kochab).
This first graphic novel focuses on Suvi (the Wizard), Ame (the Witch), and Eursulon (the Wild One) in their first meeting, and “the summer adventure that changed their lives forever…”
“Snow falling, over endless white sand … So begins the prelude to The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One. In this prequel, we meet Suvi, Ame, and Eursulon as children, and see them thrust from the known into peril, confusion, and new worlds they will struggle to understand. This is the story of how our trio met, and the events that would bring them back together so many years later.”

The whole cast wrote in a joint statement to promote this campaign:
“We’ve dreamed for a long time about finding the right way to bring The Wizard, the Witch, and the Wild One to the page, and seeing this world transformed into a graphic novel has been genuinely surreal for all of us. What began as friends telling a story together has grown into something far bigger than we ever imagined, thanks entirely to the passion of our community. We’re incredibly excited to invite you back into Umora in a whole new way.”
Writer Jadzia Axelrod added:
“As a long-time RPG player and GM — as well as professionally writing a couple of modules — I was primed to become a fan of WBN from the moment it launched. I’ve been writing comics professionally for over a decade, so imagine my delight when I got a call from an editor I love working with to adapt my favorite podcast! The stars could not have aligned better. Figuring out how to tell a story with no visuals at all in a primarily visual medium was no easy task, but I relished the challenge! And I am so incredibly proud of the end result Sarah and I have made.”
Sarah Webb continued:
“The WBN team has created such a beautifully textured and moving world here, and it was a true pleasure to spend time with this story while translating it to a visual medium. This graphic novel has so many elements I love illustrating — funny, cute, and very heartfelt characters and creatures, a fairytale witch’s cottage, deep dark forests, festivals, strange monsters — but more uniquely, I think it truly has a story worth telling.”
Alex Antone, Editorial Director at Skybound concludes:
“We’re all such big fans of Worlds Beyond Number at Skybound and we’re thrilled to be partnering with them to bring this epic adventure to the pages of comics for the very first time. Jadzia and Sarah did an absolutely knockout job on this book, and we can’t wait for fans to dive in!”
If you’re a fan of Studio Ghibli, then I reckon this one is for you.
