‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #1000 Preview May Break Your Heart

by Tony Thornley

Marvel Comics’ first series to reach issue #1000 is nigh as Amazing Spider-Man reaches the milestone on September 30th. And in new preview pages, Peter Parker may start his anniversary with the shock of his life.

Joe Kelly’s run so far on Amazing has been marked by seismic changes for Peter’s life. On the superheroic front, he was blasted into deep space, where he formed a found family with a group of aliens that followed him to Earth. Out of the costume, an encounter with a serial killer led him to his long-lost first cousin, Aunt May and Uncle Ben’s son who was thought stillborn due to an administrative screw-up at the hospital.

And as the most recent issue of the series ended, Peter was shocked to learn that May had apparently suffered a stroke.

The anniversary issue will see superstar artist Pepe Larraz return to the series, as Peter discovers May’s fate, and comes face-to-face with a new supervillain: Ravage.

Beyond the lead story, the massive celebration will feature a series of stories from some of the greatest creators in comics, as well as surprises from outside of the comics industry, two of whom are making their comics debut. The full list of stories are:

·   “Still Standing” by Noah Hawley and Patrick Gleason

·   “Requiem for a Goblin” by J.M. DeMatteis and Humberto Ramos

·   “Tears of the Spider-Queen” by Frank Miller and Peach Momoko

·   “The Big Night” by Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque and Ed McGuinness

·   “The Gesture” by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen

·   “Of Webs and Six-Guns” by Larry Lieber and Giuseppe Camuncoli

·   “I Can Never Rest” by Dan Slott and Marcos Martin

·   And more, including an interview with actor Tom Holland and Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton!

This issue is so big that a second printing has already been announced, releasing on October 28th, black and white versions of the two main covers.

Check out the preview, as well as a gallery of covers from all the artists above plus Spider-Man legend John Romita Jr. and superstar Paulo Rivera, and watch for Amazing Spider-Man #1000 in stores in two weeks on September 30th.
