Visually Stunning Historical Drama: ‘The Heike Story’ First Impressions

by Tito W. James

“A young orphan named Biwa is taken in by the powerful Taira Clan—also known as the Heike—after their leader witnesses her extraordinary psychic abilities. Unfortunately, what she predicts is a future of bloodshed, violence, and civil war. Inspired by the 12th-century epic tale Heike Monogatari.”

The Heike Story is one of Science SARU’s first projects after studio co-founder Masaaki Yuasa’s retirement. So far, the studio and director Naoko Yamada have delivered one of the most unique and visually stunning anime of the season. The show looks like a woodblock print in motion and there’s a perfect balance between abstraction and exaggeration. The dramatic narrative is gripping and if it continues we could have one of the best series this year.

The Heike Story is releasing new episodes weekly on Funimation.
